Problem of Practice
As educators, we understand the real life implications of students not being proficient readers by third grade. At Warsaw Elementary, our goal is for our K-2 students to be proficient readers now. Our teachers work diligently to ensure our students are prepared to read to learn when they arrive to third grade.
Open Court Reading is an intervention our K-1 teachers use every morning from 8:00 - 8:45 am. My Problem of Practice analyzed solely the impact of Open Court Reading on our first grade students reading progress. Our first grade is composed of five teachers and 70 students. The first grade teachers specifically focused on the following three parts of Open Court:

- Reading and Responding - emphasizes reading literature for understanding, comprehension, and inquiry.
- Language Arts - focuses on writing, spelling, and grammar.
