​Social Justice and Equity, Spring 2017

This two day retreat took place at the Franklinton Center at Bricks. Our time here grounded us in what true equity work should look like in our schools. We discussed the ways white privilege permeates our school systems and how, as school leaders, we create a culture that is equitable and excellent for all students.

American Enterprise Institute, Spring 2017

We traveled to Washington D.C. to listen to and speak with educational policy makers. Here we learned ways our advocacy can change policy to better meet the needs of our students and communities. 

The Ron Clark Academy, Spring 2017

This two day experience in Atlanta, Georgia, inspired us to make school a place where all students want to be. RCA utilizes movement, music, and magic to make education an exhilarating experience for their students.

Flipped Classroom, Spring 2017

A simple way to use instructional time more effectively is through using technology to "flip your classroom!" Dr. Lodge McCammon modeled for us special techniques used in effective flipped classrooms and we were able to demonstrate what we learned in the video to the left. 

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, Spring 2017

At the Hill Center in Durham, NC, we learned about the key features and best practices of using MTSS in our schools.

Hill Center Literacy Training, Summer 2017

This two day training in Durham, NC, empowered us to make effective literacy instruction a cornerstone in our school's culture. Here we learned not only how to effectively teach literacy, but also how to be accomplished literacy leaders.

Teach Like a Champion, Summer 2017

We explored the book Teach Like a Champion 2.0 and conducted formal presentations on each chapter. As the instructional leaders in our schools, it is imperative we understand best practices to coach teachers in effective and engaging instruction.

Facilitated by Dr. Pat Ashley, we explored the various ways we, as instructional leaders, look for and promote excellent instruction in our classrooms. 

Crucial Conversations, Summer 2017

As school leaders, we have important conversations every day with teachers, students, parents, and community stakeholders. Crucial Conversations training gave us the skills and techniques to navigate specifically the tough or "crucial" conversations we are certain to have.

Leadership Gold Training, Summer 2017

Maxwell Leadership Gold Training, facilitated by Dr. Ruth Steidinger allowed us to explore leadership through the lens of "Our Why." We crafted personal mission and vision statements as well as reviewed the many "tips" Dr. Maxwell gives for developing great leadership. 

Distinguished Leadership in Practice, Fall 2017

In these six development sessions facilitated by various accomplished North Carolina principals, we explored the NC Principal Standards in detail and completed assignments that provided us opportunities to reflect on the type of school leaders we aspire to be.

National Forum to Advance Rural Education, Fall 2017

This three day conference in Columbus, OH, gave us exposure to numerous innovative ideas that are being implemented across the country in rural school districts. 

NCPAPA Conference, Fall 2017

We had the wonderful opportunity of working the NCPAPA conference under the leadership of Dr. Shirley Arrington. Whether it was introducing keynote speakers, escorting attendees to their sessions, or attending sessions ourselves, this conference allowed us to learn from and network with successful leaders across North Carolina.

Digital Learning at The Friday Institute, Fall 2017

Our two day training on Digital Learning showcased the importance of making education individualized for students. We know all children possess natural and unique brilliance and these sessions helped remind us that in order to elicit that brilliance, we must individualize education for our children. ​

Digital Storytelling Retreat, Fall 2017

This retreat in Durham served as a pivotal cornerstone in our graduate experience. Here is where we deeply reflected on who we are and why we are here, and we shared personal narratives with each other through the creation of our digital stories.

BB&T Leadership Training, Spring 2018

We were asked to fill out a leadership self-assessment before attending this training. During the two day training with our facilitator, we dug deeply into our personal leadership results and how we use those individual inclinations to serve as strengths as we lead schools.

No Kid Hungry Conference, Spring 2018

This conference in Chapel Hill enlightened each of us on the importance of every child receiving a healthy breakfast every day. We explored options such as "Breakfast in the Classroom" to ensure every child receives breakfast.

Facilitated by fellow colleague, Matthew Hickson, this training session provided us specific ways to micro-affirm students and ensure our school is safe, respectful, and equitable for ALL students. 

ASCD Empower18 Conference, Spring 2018

The ASCD Empower18 Conference in Boston provided the opportunity to collaborate with and hear from inspiring educators from across the country. It was here we learned specifically about the importance of global education, restorative discipline practices, and methods of effective teacher coaching.

At the NCASA conference in Concord, NC, we were able to hear from various principals, district officials, and superintendents from across the state about the tangible steps to take to turn around a school.
